Bone Marrow Donors Needed

Please read about these two opportunities to save lives!

Sebastian Moustirats is17 months old.  He was born with a rare immune deficiency known as Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome (WAS). His only chance of survival is to receive a bone marrow transplant.  The classic form of WAS is characterized by an increased tendency to bleed caused by a reduced number of platelets, recurrent infections and eczema of the skin.

Because of his low blood platelet count, Sebastian suffered a severe brain bleed a few weeks ago.  The doctors told us that he may not survive, but miraculously, numerous platelet transfusions stopped the bleeding and his brain is healing. 

He will need bi-weekly platelet transfusions to prevent further head bleeds until we can find the right bone marrow donor. He can receive platelets from blood types is A- or A+, AB - or AB+.  If there is no ideal match, he can also receive platelets from type O donors.  We are hoping to find 10-20 platelet donors who can commit to donating platelets once a month.  Even if someone does not have a compatible blood type, they can still be registered to give platelets so that there will not be a shortage when Sebastian needs to be transfused.   

We want to take this opportunity to kindly ask people to join the National Bone Marrow Registry and donate blood and platelets to help us fight this battle for Sebastian's life as well as the many other children at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital waiting for a transplant. Dear Friends and Family,

As many of you know, in December of 2007 I was diagnosed with an accute form of leukemia.  I have relapsed once already during remission and am currently undergoing more chemo.  My doctor's at Stanford say my only chance for survival and a cure is to undergo a transplant. We have been searching for a good match on the National Marrow Donor Register and to date have not been able to identify a donor.  The next step is for me to recruit donors myself that may match the criteria I am looking for which is American Indian/German.

If you or anyone you know may have this ethnic background and would like to be tested as a potential donor, please have them email me a reply with their full name and address. A cheek swab kit will be sent directly to their home with a self return envelope and an identification number will be assigned to them to help us track the results.  All possible donors must be 18 years or older.  There is no cost to the donor.

Please forward this email out to as many people as you can. The more people tested the better chances of my finding a life saving donor.
