Call Hershey - Promote Fair Trade Chocolate
Tuesday, June 23 2009 @ 10:53 AM Today, Reach And Teach, Green America and our allies at the International Labor Rights Forum (ILRF) and Global Exchange ask you to join with us to take a simple action that can improve the lives of cocoa farmers overseas. We're designating today a National Day of Action for Fair Trade, and asking for all of our friends, members and supporters to place a two-minute phone call to the Hershey Foods Corporation – one of the biggest chocolate-sellers in the US – and ask them to support their cocoa farmers by obtaining third-party Fair Trade certification for their products. Our friends at Green America have put together all the phone numbers and a sample calling script, so all you have to do is pick up the phone.
Action: Call Hershey to ask for more Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate in the US Earlier this spring, we told you how Cadbury is taking steps to bring more Fair Trade chocolate to Europe via its popular Dairy Milk bar. But there's still no conventional US chocolate company that is stepping up to make Fair Trade Certified™ chocolate widely available on US supermarket shelves. Our own Green America Business Network members have led the way (companies like Divine, Equal Exchange, Ithaca Fine Chocolates, Sweet Earth Organics, and Theo Chocolates), and it's time for the conventional companies to follow. Hershey needs to take a stand against abusive child labor in the cocoa supply chain, and the best way to do that is to go Fair Trade. When you call Hershey today, you'll be joining with Fair Trade supporters across the country who want to see US chocolate companies upholding a higher standard for their supply chains. (If you place a call, please e-mail Green America later and let them know how it went.) Find phone numbers and a sample calling script »
Reach And Teach has long been a proponent of fair trade and we're proud to be members of Green America. Whenever possible we source our products from green and fair trade vendors. Fair Trade makes a HUGE difference in the lives of people across the planet who work hard to produce food and other goods that make our lives better. Why shouldn't those same people have the best possible lives? Check out the video below to get an idea of how much better Fair Trade is for those who produce our chocolate and coffee.
Reach And Teach discovered this great animation through the Fair Trade Resource Network in Washington D.C. and have been in touch with them and BAFTS about making it available to our web site visitors. Please consider making a donation to either of those organizations to help with their great work. LyricsAll year long the farmer tills his soil The guy who buys his coffee doesn’t speak his lingo Cotton, bananas, cocoa and coffee 3000 pesos are no longer enough; A scientist arrives from the US of A The TV ads use a famous star, One little bean of all that coffee The smooth exporter… plays his trick One way we can improve the global plot Part of the world has been plundered for years Another farmer worked a year on his lands.
