First, U.S. health care costs per patient ($4,178 per capita) are more than twice the median of all 191 countries surveyed ($1,783 per capita), and far more than its closest competitor Switzerland ($2,794 per capita). (U. Maine) 49. Second, U.S. health care costs as a percent of gross domestic product (13.6% of GDP) are far greater than its closest competitors Germany (10.6% of GDP) and Switzerland (10.4% of GDP).
